Merry Christmas

It's hard to believe that Christmas is upon us.   The last few days have been a blur.   But they have been a blur filled with good friends, family, fun and of course, the end of finals.

Praise God on that last one!

The kids finished school on Thursday at noon.  Never seen such happy kids get in my car.  We were so ready for the break.  And I definitely include myself in that "we!"

Our dear friends (and former neighbors), the Clark family arrived from Virginia that afternoon.  It was such a wonderful gift to have them here. The kids picked up like they had seen each other just a few days ago, instead of a few years ago.  We saw Star Wars, ICE! at Opryland, took them downtown Nashville, a Vanderbilt basketball game and just hung out at the house.

Lina, David, Cooper and Cole arrived Friday night.  David and the boys joined us all at the Vandy game and dinner at SATCO.  A large gaggle of loud kids ensured we made it on the scoreboard several times, which made all the kids happy.  They even won a free pizza.   Oh, and Vandy won, too!

On Saturday night we had our extended crew, plus B's family over for dinner.  The house was brimming with people and a good time was had by all. We were so sad to wake up this morning and have to say goodbye to the Clarks.  They had a long drive ahead of them, but thankfully, it was an uneventful one and they are home safe and sound.
Of course, there was still a lot to do today.  Bassam took our kids and the nephews to JumpStreet while I did some last minute wrapping and got the house ready for tonight's festivities.  I also made a Target run.

They were putting out the Valentine's Day stuff, y'all.

Tonight we had my parents, Rundi, plus Bassam's family all over for dinner.  Afterward, GG, Gus, Rundi and our crew finished the evening at St. Andrew for Christmas eve worship.  It was a long day, but I'm always so glad to end it at church.

Of course, I forgot to take pictures.  Again.

As I kick myself for that, I did grab a couple of our tree tonight.  The calm before the storm, I suppose.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas.

The fab four!

The kids have continued to enjoy scads of COUSIN TIME!  On Sunday, Lina and the kids, B's folks and brother all came over for dinner.   Before they became a hot mess playing, I took the fab four  outside and snapped some pictures.  Grandma wanted and updated shot of her grandkids!   As always, the best ones were taken over at my neighbors!  Thank goodness he has such a great yard and is so gracious about sharing it!

I snapped about 50 (love digital cameras, no?) and probably got 8 or 9 really good ones.  A-MAZE-ING!!  And more amazing, I snapped those 50 pictures in just over 2 minutes.  Getting these 4 to stand still(ish) and smile is no easy task!

Tonight, we picked up Lina and the kids and headed out to the fair.  It was an unheard of 78 degrees when we got out there.  Since it didn't open until 6 and traffic was a nightmare, we fed the kids before we went and no fair food was consumed (whaaaat!???).  But they all had a ball at the "little farm" and on the midway riding the questionably safe rides, playing games and winning bizarre-colored gecko stuffed animals.

A good time was had by all.

But I kind of want to go back later this week or weekend.  With four kids in tow, there was no time/interest in all the community booths (with their multitude of freebies!) and let's not forget about the kettle corn and frozen lemonades!

What's the fair with out that?

Home Sweet Home

We are back home after an oh-so-fun week in Illinois.    I am utterly exhausted but promised myself I would update the blog tonight.  And since it's not yet 8:00 pm and pitch black outside, I'm already thinking about bed.

And yes, I realized I sound like a 70 year old woman named Agnes trapped in a 39 year old body when I say that.

The kids and I drove up to Illinois after church on Sunday.  It was a later start than I prefer, but we made it up there by bedtime.  Of course, it was pitch black by 5:00, and as I may have mentioned, I get pretty tired once that happens.

Sorry, there goes Agnes again.

Anyway, we sprung into action on Monday morning and divided along gender lines for the day.   While Gus and Matthew went to Legoland Discover Center in Schaumburg, GG, Gracie and I hopped the train for our long awaited American Girl excursion.

Despite my hope thought that the redhead would abandon her interest in a doll, it has remained front and center and really, the only thing on her Christmas list.   We had the whole American Girl experience, starting with brunch in the American Girl cafe, which admittedly was oh-so-yummy and downright adorable with all it's sweet details.
From there, we met up with our personal shopper, Enchantra (yes, really her name and she was the sweetest thing ever and more helpful than you can imagine!) who helped Gracie select her doll and two outfits to go with her.   The personal shopping sounds froofy, but let me point out that it's a complimentary service and wildly useful to any parent who is not really doll savvy.

And that would be me.

There was no up-sell.   She asked me in advance what we were shopping for,and when Gracie had selected those items she said, "Okay, Gracie, we're finished."   Niiiiiiice!!  Then she took me to a lounge area where she rang up my loot (cha-ching!) and sent me out with gift bags of bottled water, candied popcorn and chocolate covered pretzels for each of us for the ride home.

These people didn't miss a trick.  Very Disney-esque.  It's all in the details.

From there, Gracie went to the photo studio where she had her picture taken with her doll that was made to look like an American Girl magazine cover.  She loved that.   But after the photo, it was time to say  goodbye to her yet-to-be-named doll, as she won't officially be hers until Christmas, although I did let her keep the picture!

We met up with the boys for a late lunch.  Legoland Discovery Center was a hit, although there are no pictures to share.   Gus and the iPod touch camera are a little incompatible, it seems.  But Matthew gave us a blow-by-blow description and it sounds nothing less than amazing.  I'd like to go over there next time, too.

Monday night, I got to enjoy an awesome girls night with my pals, Betsy, Beth, Michelle, Mindy, Jenni, and Kim.   So grateful that they changed their schedules so I could be there for their monthly gathering.  Always great to catch up with some of my oldest and dearest friends!

And speaking of dear friends, on Tuesday I drove to Kankakee to meet up with my friend Kendra who lives near Champaign. We lunched, we shopped and talked like we had last seen each other a few days ago instead of last July.

The kids spent Tuesday at the Arboretum with my parents and then that evening got to go out on their regular excursion to Enchanted Castle with Aunt Amy.   They came home with full bellies (only Aunt Amy would let them get chocolate chip pancakes for dinner!) and a bag full of prizes.

A large portion of Wednesday was spent getting to Midway aiprort, sitting around Midway airport and attempting to get home from Midway airport.  Bassam's 1 hour flight turned into almost 7 hours of travel due to heavy fog in Chicago.  Really, it was still a 1 hour flight, but there were 2 1/2 hours sitting around the Nashville airport, an hour flight, 90 minutes sitting on the plane waiting for a gate and then the long ride back to my parents.   The day ended on a high note, however, as we had Portillos for dinner.

Finally, Thanksgiving arrived.   While my mom got to cheffing up the feast, the rest of us went bowling on Thursday morning.   The kids were so hyped us, I think it was probably good to get them out of the house.   Besides, Amy had to work that afternoon, so it was a chance to spend part of Thanksgiving with her.

We bowled three games before returning to a house full of good smells.  Dinner was amazing and my big contribution to the day came afterwards when I cleaned up the kitchen and all the dishes.  Some people cook, some people clean.  I'm the latter.

The rest of the day was spent combing the ads, watching football, a trip to the park (it was around 60 degrees all week!) and finishing off the day watching Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.  Although it was as few people as I can remember around my mom's Thanksgiving table in a very long time, it was a great day!

We were up early this morning and on the road before 8 am.   While we had originally planned to stay in Illinois another day,  Bassam's sister and her family were in town back home and leaving on Saturday morning.  We rolled in to Nashville a little after 3 and were at B's folks by 4.  Not only did his mom have a wonderful dinner for us, but we got to catch up with Lina and David and the kids got some cousin time.

Although I haven't unpacked a single suitcase and there is a pile of mail to sort, I just might head off to bed.  After all, we still have a full weekend with virtually nothing on the calendar.   It's been quite a while since we've had a day like that.

Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful.  And thank you for keeping tabs on us here at And Charlie Makes 5.

Night at the fair!

Took advantage of the "cooler temperatures" (it was only 90 today) and went to the Williamson County Fair tonight.   We brought Lina, Cooper and Cole with us and had a great time!   As always, the Little Farm was a huge hit, but all four kids enjoyed a couple rides on the midway, too!

Can't believe tomorrow is our last day of summer vacation --at least for Matthew.  Where on earth has summer gone?

Birthdays and Cousins

The laundry may be done, but the house is still a wreck.

Ahhh . . . . love the post-vacation reality check, don't you?  It's only made worse by the fact that I need to pack up again as I'm headed to Illinois for my class reunion tomorrow.

And remember that little black-heel sandal problem I was having before my cousins wedding back in May?  I still haven't solved it yet.    Nice that I remember that the night before I leave and I need to wear black dress shoes again!

Last night we finally wrapped up Matthew's birthday celebrations (for those of you keeping track at home, this made number 3!) with a party with B's family.  Uncle Wad, Grandma and Papa were all there --as were Lina, Cooper and Cole who are in from Florida.   The cousins had a wonderful time and we are looking forward to hanging out with them more in the week to come!

And seriously, I've said it before, but I have the cutest nephews EVER!

Cousin love!

My kids are over the moon this weekend because in addition to being Easter, Cooper and Cole are in town!  Lina brought the boys over to Matthew's soccer game this morning (Bassam, David and Wadih were off playing golf), which pleased him very much!   Afterward we grabbed lunch and took the kids to Granny White Park.   The four of them have such a ball together and play like it was only yesterday that they last saw each other.  It reminds me of me, Amy, Theresa and Paul growing up.   We usually only saw each other during summer when they came in from Hawaii, but it never felt like it had been that long.  In a matter of minutes, we'd be sitting around the table playing cards (and talking trash as our Uncle Harry had taught us!).

Playdate!

Due to the large, dark cloud looming over Nashvegas today, Lina and I abandoned our trip to the Zoo this morning. Instead she and the kids, as well as my friend Beth and her two kids all came over to our house. We held an impromptu Easter egg hunt and the kids played. Thankfully, I had a large stash of chicken nuggets in my freezer, so I was able to whip up a lunch of chicken, carrots, Cheez-its, strawberries and carrots.

My nephew Cole has the best appetite. Seriously. He is 14 months and I think he put away 5 chicken nuggets. Gracie maybe ate 3 (of course, she had a couple Easter eggs full of M&Ms and jelly beans already in her tummy).

Not our original plan for the day, but a good time was had by all!
